Channels

So, by now you must be wondering what you can pull in with this antenna that has everyone so excited and ready to cut their existing cable and satellite service providers?  There are many places where you can get a list of available OTA HD channels online in your area.  The grid from TVfool.com mentioned when discussing the preamp and antenna is a good place to start.

I've included a list of the channels in my area.  I can honestly say that I have pulled in signal from every high definition TV channel listed below, (and even some others if the weather conditions are optimal)!  Being in Canada, we still have some people broadcasting in analog, so there are a bunch more channels that come in and make a good backup to the digital signal sometimes going down.  I will only list the digital signals for you here.  The only significant analog station that is not currently broadcasting in high definition is TVOntario, a public channel.  They have some great documentaries and political shows, so I can't wait for them to go digital high definition!

Remember, you may not get all these channels, depending on your location, antenna mounting option, amount of cable and other line impediments, current weather at your location, and weather at the broadcast tower.  This is why testing and the best equipment is so important.  Personally, I went out, bought a cheap 4 bay antenna, and ran a super long  cable from the back of my TV out the front door to test reception.  With the antenna on the ground, (roughly pointed at where I thought the broadcast tower was located and leaning against the house), I picked up a lot of clear channels, (depending on the weather), and I was hooked on OTA as a new hobby!

New channels come along all the time.   For instance, 2-2 is now an NBC all amateur sports station.  11-1 is an all local news station during the day, and shows Hollywood movies in the evening.  Currently some channels come in on an intermittent basis, but through testing and tweaking I have a strong stable of channels that come in reliably.  Enough channels to make me cut my cable TV provider out of my house for good!

There is nothing like doing the first few channel scans on the TV after a fresh installation and watching the number of channels grow... and grow... and grow - Good luck to you and have fun finding out what is available in your area!

UPDATE: 31 May 2011.
-51-1, 51-2, and 51-3 are not coming in reliably with the spring weather, they might have a transmitter issue.  Several people I've spoken to have not received signal from them in quite a while.  However, 2 NEW stable channels have been added to the ones listed below, both emanating from Buffalo.
-49-2 is "The Cool TV" and plays pop music videos from all eras (including recent releases) with NO VJs!
-29-2 is "The Country Music Channel" and plays all country music videos with NO VJs!
-19-? & 10-? should be the channels for TVOntario and the new CTV2 (the rebranding of "A-Channel").  Will update as soon as they are picked up by a channel scan!
